Maria Folau is one of the most popular and richest New Zealand player who was born on February 18, 1987 in Tokoroa, Waikato, New Zealand. Folau was born Solonaima Maria Tuta’ia at Tokoroa on February 18, 1987. She is the daughter of Fuisami Tuta’ia (a forest worker) and Niukini (a homemaker), who had in 1983 moved from Samoa to New Zealand. Named after her grandmothers Solonaima, Malia and Malia, she started using her middle name at school because her teacher was having trouble pronouncing her first name. Maria Tuta’ia attended Lynfield College, but she transferred to Mount Albert Grammar School in her final year. She was a captain of MAGS’s first Premier Netball team. They came in fourth place at the Upper North Island Secondary Schools Tournament and New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships. Folau was selected in the New Zealand U21 team in 2003. Two years later, she was part of the winning team that won the 2005 World Youth Cup from Miami. Folau was invited to the Silver Ferns team that year. She made her debut on the court when the Ferns visited Jamaica. Her Ferns career was short-lived and she was eventually dropped by Auckland Diamonds due to her height of 1.88m (6 ft 2 inches).
Folau was the only player sent off in the match against Swifts for persistent breaking during the 2010 ANZ Championship. Folau was sent off in the final two minutes of the match. She did not take part in that match.
In 2014, Folau was inducted into the Mt. Albert Grammar School Hall of Fame.
Folau is married to the Tongan Australian rugby player Israel Folau. The two married in Kangaroo Valley, New South Wales on 27 November 2017, in a private outdoor ceremony. She subsequently changed her last name from Tuta’ia to Folau.
She is well-known for scoring crucial goals such as the gold medal match against Australia in the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2011 ANZ Championship season, when she scored the winning goal against the Magic in the final seconds.

Solonaima Maria Folau (nee Tuta’ia; 18 February 1987, Tokoroa), is a retired New Zealand netballer. She was a regular player for the New Zealand netball team, The Silver Ferns.
Folau was a domestic netball player for the Auckland Diamonds in the National Bank Cup 2005-2007. Folau signed with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in 2008 to partner Irene van Dyk as the shooting circle partner. After two years playing with the Magic, she transferred back to Auckland in 2010 to join the Northern Mystics.
During her senior international career, Maria Folau has won gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, 2006 Commonwealth Games and the 2009 World Netball Series, in addition to a silver medal at the 2007 World Netball Championships.
