He played in the National Hockey League with the Florida Panthers (NHL), and the Calgary Flames (NHL).
Nilson was placed on waivers by the Flames in the summer 2008 and, after clearing with no other club, he was sent to Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), for the remainder of the season. Nilson signed a one-year contract with Djurgarden in 2009-10. After scoring 24 goals and 51 point, he led his team to the playoffs. Nilson continued to produce points throughout the playoffs, and Djurgarden reached finals against HV71. They lost four to two.
After three seasons with the Panthers he was traded to Calgary Flames on March 8th 2004 for a second round draft selection (used to select David Booth). Nilson made it to the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time, scoring 11 points in 26 playoffs matches. Calgary would continue to be his home for three more seasons.
