Sturm was selected to the 1999 NHL All-Star Game. Sturm competed with Team World and finished second in the Skills Competition’s fastest skating segment. He circled the rink in 14.654 seconds. This was 14 hundredths faster than Peter Bondra, Washington Capitals’ ice skater. Sturm scored another goal for Team World, beating them by 8-6. Sturm’s second NHL season saw him play with 16 goals and 38 points in 78 games. Sturm was injured in a game against Edmonton Oilers on April 12, 1999. He was unable to play in the final two regular season games, but he returned in time to make the 1999 playoffs. The Sharks lost to the Colorado Avalanche in round one. He scored 2 goals and added 4 points in 6 games.
In the next two seasons, Sturm recorded points totals of 27 and 32. He helped the Sharks advance to the second round of the 2000 playoffs, defeating the St. Louis Blues in seven games before being eliminated by the Stars. In 2001–02, Sturm reached the 40-plus mark in points with 21 goals and 20 assists. His efforts helped the Sharks win the Pacific Division for the first time in team history. They went on to lose in the second round of the 2002 playoffs to the Colorado Avalanche. During the off-season, he was re-signed by the Sharks to a one-year contract on July 1, 2002. However, the Sharks missed the playoffs for the first time in Sturm’s tenure in San Jose, finishing second-last in the West.
Sturm was on pace for another career year in 2003–04 when he suffered a season-ending knee injury on March 5, 2004. Missing the last 15 games of the regular season, he recorded 21 goals and 41 points over 64 games. In Sturm’s absence, the Sharks qualified for the Western Conference Finals during the 2004 playoffs for the first time in team history, but lost to the Calgary Flames in six games. Due to the NHL lockout, Sturm played the 2004–05 season back in Germany with ERC Ingolstadt of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. He recorded 38 points (22 goals and 16 assists) over 64 regular season games, then helped his team to the playoff semifinals.
Sturm signed his NHL contract in July 1997 with the Sharks. After making the team from training camp, he was scratched in the first game 1997-98 season. He dressed up and scored his first NHL goal against Jeff Hackett, Chicago Blackhawks, on October 4, 1997. After exiting the penalty box, his goal was a breakaway and won the game. It also broke a tie that had been tied at 2-2. After his second month in NHL play, Sturm was already making a name for himself as a two-way, defensively responsible forward. He was second in league scoring to Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mike Johnson. He was named league’s rookie-of-the-month for November 1997. He was fifth among rookie league players in scoring with 30, (20 goals and 20 assists), over 74 games. The Sharks finished as the eighth seed in the Western Conference and qualified for the playoffs, their third consecutive year. They were defeated by the Dallas Stars in round one. Sturm was absent in the post-season, but he did not score any points.

After playing in EV Landshut’s junior program in Germany for a few years, he was invited to join the club’s top-ranked Deutsche Eishockey Liga team in 1995-96. As a rookie, he scored 12 goals and 32 points in 47 games. EV Landshut was within three points of winning the regular season title on a team basis. He was selected by San Jose Sharks in round 21 of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He returned to Germany to play one more season for EV Landshut. His totals were 16 goals and 43 points in 46 games. This ranked him fourth in team scoring.
Sturm started his career playing for the German club EV Landshut from 1995 to 1997. He was 21st in the NHL Entry Draft 1996 by the San Jose Sharks. He played his first season with the team from 1997 to 1998. He was traded to Boston Bruins in November 2005 as part of a package for Joe Thornton. Sturm was with Boston from 2007-2011, until he was traded to the Washington Capitals and Los Angeles Kings in a package deal. In July 2011, he signed as an unrestricted, free agent with the Vancouver Canucks. He was traded to the Florida Panthers within a month of the start of the next season.
A one-time NHL All-Star (1999), Sturm established himself as a consistent 20-goal scorer in the league, achieving the mark seven of eight times between 2001–02 and 2009–10. Internationally, Sturm competed for Germany in four IIHF World Championships, two Winter Olympics and one World Cup.
