Marco Lucchinelli, an Italian professional Grand Prix motorcycle racer, was born 26 June 1954. He won the FIM 500cc World Championship in 1981. He is a MotoGP Legend.

1981 was Lucchinelli’s best year. He started the year by beating Kenny Roberts at the Imola 200 race in Italy. After battling Randy Mamola until the end of the season, he won 5 Grand Prix victories on the Roberto Gallina-backed Suzuki. He also won the 500cc World Championship. Lucchinelli was offered a Honda job to race the new three-cylinder NS500 with Takazumi Katayama and Freddie Spencer in 1982. Franco Uncini, the Roberto Gallina Suzuki team’s champion, would win the championship in a disappointing season. Lucchinelli had previously won the title that year.

On 6 December 1991 he was arrested for drug possession. He spent some time in jail, during which he successfully fought against drug addiction. After retiring, Lucchinelli became a television commentator for the Eurosport network’s motorcycle race coverage. He retired with 6 Grand Prix victories. However, he briefly returned from retirement in 1998, entering the 1000 km Monza, and the opening race of the International Sports Racing Series (ISRS), driving for Centenari; he didn’t start the 1000 km Monza, and finished sixth overall (second in the CN class) in the opening round of the ISRS.

Lucchinelli was back with Suzuki in 1978, and in 1980, he won the 500cc Grand Prix at The Nurburgring. He finished the season third behind Randy Mamola and Kenny Roberts.

In 1975, he began his road racing career on a Laverda for endurance racing. Yamaha gave him a sponsorship bike for the Italian National Championship and a ride in their 1975 Nations Grand Prix in 350 class.

He rode a Suzuki 500cc World Championship bike in 1976, earning him fourth place with two second-place finishes and a third place. Crazy Horse was his wild riding style, which attracted many admirers. He crashed quite a few times because of his fearless riding style. He would finish 11th in the 500 World Championships on a Yamaha in 1977.

Lucchinelli raced a Ducati 851 to a popular win at the 1987 Daytona Battle of the Twins race. In 1988 he joined the Ducati in the Superbike World Championship where he won two races during the year before taking on the role of Ducati’s team manager.
