Free, who suffered from gender dysphoria throughout her entire life, came out to the public as Marcie Free in Nov 1993. Free quit the music industry in 1995 and returned to Michigan to be with her family. She still sings professionally and, in September 2009, Free and Gowdy regrouped as Unruly Child. Frontiers Records signed her recording contract. Worlds Collide, a new album by that label, was released to great critical acclaim. The Unruly Child triad (Free Gowdy and Allison) continue to record and write. The band released Down the Rabbit Hole, a new album on their own label “Unruly Records” in 2014.
Free formed Unruly Child in 1990 with Bruce Gowdy (Stone Fury/World Trade), and Guy Allison (World Trade (keyboards). Unruly Child signed with Atlantic/Interscope Records and released their debut album, entitled “Unruly Child”, in 1992. Free performed the theme song “(To Be (The Best of the Best)” for the 1993 action film, Best of the Best II. A solo album of demos Free recorded for Judithe Randall and Robin Randall, was also released in 1993 on Now & Then Records in the UK. Frontiers Records reissued Long Way from Love in 1998. This album included some of Free’s live performances while in Manchester, England in October 1993 for “The Gods of AOR”, the first rock festival.

Free began singing professionally when she was 19 years old, while still living in Flint, Michigan (1973). Free moved to Las Vegas in 1975. This eventually led her to Los Angeles, CA, where she met Carmine Appice, Vanilla Fudge Beck, Bogert & Appice and Rod Stewart in 1983. They formed King Kobra together and were signed to Capitol Records, 1984. Free recorded two albums together with King Kobra: Ready to Strike, and Thrill of a Lifetime before he left in November 1986 to pursue other music interests.
Free, guitarist Danny Jacob, keyboardist Erik Scott, and Jan Uvena formed a band in 1987. This group would become known as Signal. Signal released 1989’s Loud and Clear on EMI before disbanding shortly thereafter.
Shortly after the release of Long Way from Love, Unruly Child, after losing their record deal with Atlantic/Interscope, had reformed under the moniker Twelve Pound Sledge and were writing new material in hopes of re-signing with another U.S. label. That never happened, though songs from these sessions were later released in 1995, as a solo album on independent labels in Germany and Japan, entitled Tormented.
