Sarabia was born in Abanto-y Cierbana Zierbena in Biscay. He came through Athletic Bilbao’s youth system Lezama. On 19 September 1976, he made his debut in the main squad in a home draw against CD Malaga. His older brother, Jaen, was rejected by the club due to his birthplace of Torres, Jaen. This was despite having lived most of his life in Biscay.
From 1978 to 1979, Sarabia was a full first-team player. He had also been on loan with Barakaldo FC the year before. Sarabia then went on to play in 284 La Liga matches for Basques, scoring 83 goals. His best output was 16 during the 1982-83 season, when Athletic won the league title. He renewed it the next campaign.
Sarabia retired aged 34 in 1991, after three seasons with modest CD Logroñés also in the top division, scoring more than 20 official goals during his stint. He took up coaching three years later, having very brief stints in the second level – the only season he started and finished, with Bilbao Athletic, ended in relegation.
