Born in Madrid, Manu joined Real Madrid’s youth setup in 1995, aged 13, and made his senior debuts with the C-team in 2000–01, in Tercera División. In the following year he was promoted to the reserves in Segunda División B, but failed to make an appearance during the season.
After a brief period with amateurs UD Casetas, Manu joined Palamós CF in the third level. In June 2004 he moved to fellow league club Levante UD B, and served as third-choice for the main squad in 2006–07, behind José Francisco Molina and Pablo Cavallero.
