Manolis Kellis is one of the most popular and richest Computational Biologist who was born on March 13, 1977 in Athens, Attica, Greece. Manolis Kambuselles, born 1977 in Greece, is a Professor of Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is also a member of both the Broad Institute of MIT (MIT) and Harvard. He is the Head of the Computational Biology Group (MIT) and a Principal Investigator at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab at MIT.

Kellis, Li Huei Tsai and other researchers at MIT used epigenomic markers in mouse and human brains to study the mechanisms that lead to Alzheimer’s. Researchers have suggested that inflammation and immune cell activation, long associated with Alzheimer’s disease, is not just a result of neurodegeneration. They found that immune cells change even before neurodegeneration occurs in mice with Alzheimer’s-like symptoms.

Manolis Kellis is the author of 187 journal publications, which have been cited 68.380 times as of July 2018. His large-scale genomics projects include the Roadmap Epigenomics, Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE), and the Genotype Tissue-Expression project (GTEx).

He also won the Sprowls award, which recognizes the best doctorate thesis on Computer Science and the first Paris Kanellakis graduate fellowship. He worked at MIT on computational biology before that.

Kellis began comparing the genomes different yeast species’ genomes as a graduate student at MIT. He developed computational methods to identify patterns of similarity or difference between closely related genes. This work was published in Nature 2003. His goal was to create methods to understand genomes and to then apply them to the human genome.
