“(…) Some of the pieces that I loved most were best seen at night. The window through which Italian Manfredi Benjamininati’s installation can be viewed is a hole punched into the wall of a decrepit building in the city center. You are confronted by a vision that combines complete human happiness with the darkness and cold. A brightly lit drawing room, with comfortable sofas and chairs, books, carpets and flowers, is a place of total happiness. There are newspapers, toys, a doll’s house, and tools that dad uses to build a theatre for his children scattered about the floor. As you’re taking it all in, you suddenly notice something moving and the sinister figure peering in from the opposite direction.

Richard Dorment, The Daily Telegraph 22 September 2008

Manfredi Beninati, who had previously studied law and film, began his career as an artist and began drawing. After spending some time in England and Spain, Manfredi Beninati returned to Italy in 2002 to create sculptures and figurative painting. These were inspired by his childhood memories, real and sometimes imaginary. Beninati began his studies in law and then switched to film in the 1990s, while he was working as an assistant director for the Italian film industry. He moved to London in 1994 and began his career as a visual artist. He was one of the four artists selected to represent his country in the 51 Venice Biennale, where he won the audience award for the Italian Pavilion. He was awarded a fellowship at American Academy in Rome for 2006 as part of the Rome Prize. He lives and works in Los Angeles, Palermo and Rome. Milena Muzquiz, his wife, is an actress and founder of an experimental theatre group. James Cohan Gallery in New York, Tomio Kyama in Tokyo, and Galleria Lorcan O’Neill are his representatives in Rome.

Beninati’s drawings and paintings often lack subject and order. He uses stratification to achieve a non-hierarchical balance where all objects are depicted on the same plane. Every setting, whether it is a house interior or a landscape imagined, has the same value. This allows for new order. The artist uses fluid brushstrokes and glazes to create a unique atmosphere. He describes figures that appear to emerge slowly from a dreamlike background. Beninati’s pictorial work is bound to installations that look deserted, places that are difficult to access and spaces that can only be seen through darkened glass or cracks (Venice Biennale 2005; XV Quadriennale Rome 2008), a form of voyeurism that violates the privacy sphere and indefiniteness in memory. Through drawings, oil colours, and installations, the artist creates fragments of an inner universe with literary and artistic references. Beninati belongs to the younger generation of painters and his pictures are in an international contemporary style. His work is a common style that many younger people can identify with. His loose, dreamy figurative dreamsscapes are loose and washy. They make the viewer feel like there is a thick gauze covering the painting and a storybook world behind it.

“Art reveals mysteries concerning us as individuals and society, whilst philosophy explains why they are there. The moment that an artist turns philosopher (which happens often) then things don’t work anymore. ” – Manfredi Beninati in Lowenna Waters’ interview. The white review, 2011
