Since May 7, 2009, he has been Deputy Chief of Joint Staff for the Georgian Armed Forces. Before that, he was a chief-of-staff for peacekeeping operations in Georgia’s conflict areas in South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
At the start of the 2008 South Ossetia War, Kurashvili informed his Russian counterparts of the impending military operation. He then announced to Rustavi 2, television that Georgian forces were moving towards “establishing constitutional order in Ossetian Region.” Later, he described his comments as “not authorized and approved by senior” and “impulsive” but not prepared. The statement caused Kurashvili to be reprimanded from the Georgian Defense Ministry. He sustained injuries during the war.
On May 6, 2009 according to the order of the Minister of Defense of Georgia Mamuka Kurashvili was moved from position of Deputy Head of the General Inspection of Ministry of Defense to Deputy Chief of the Joint Staff of GAF.
On 28 October 2008, during the hearings of the Georgian parliament special committee, which was studying the 2008 South Ossetia conflict, he claimed that the Russian military destroyed the South Ossetia peacekeepers positions and not Georgian artillery bombardment.
