Maker was born on the 1st of January 1998 in South Sudan with his older brother Thon Maker. His uncle, a local administrator, assisted Matur and his family to flee Uganda during civil war in their homeland. Maker, then four years old, fled to Uganda and settled in Perth. They still made occasional trips to South Sudan. Matur started soccer at Grayhounds soccer Club, where many South Sudanese children played alongside him. Matur, who was 13 years old, was found by Edward Smith, a basketball scout. He moved to Sydney with Smith before moving to the United States. Matur was allowed by his parents to go to high school with his brother. Smith became their legal guardian.

Maker played a postgraduate season of basketball at Mississauga Prep in Mississauga, Ontario for 2017–18. By 2018, he was averaging 25.5 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.1 blocks and 1.7 steals. On 5 January 2018, Maker declared intentions to bypass college and enter the 2018 NBA draft, attempting to follow a similar path as his brother in 2016. He drew attention from scouts on 11 January, when he notched 45 points, 20 rebounds, two blocks, and three steals in a 95–85 defeat to GTA Prep. However, due to a lack of attention on his name during the 2018 NBA Draft process, he withdrew his name from the 2018 NBA draft on the 11 June international deadline.

On October 19, 2019, Maker signed with the Houston Rockets of the NBA, but was waived the next day. Following this, Maker was added to the roster of the Rockets’ NBA G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

Maker moved to Prolific Prep North, Sault Ste. in 2016-17. Marie, Ontario. He was coached there by Edward Smith, his guardian, and became teammates with Makur Makur. Matur was able to move closer to his brother, Thon, after the Milwaukee Bucks selected him in the 2016 NBA draft. Maker participated in the BioSteel All Canadian Basketball Game in Toronto in April 2017. He was named most valuable player. Maker scored 25 points and grabbed six rebounds in the game. He shot 8-of-11 from behind the arc, and played only 12 minutes. He averaged 26 points per game and seven rebounds at the adidas Nations event in August.
