On November 20, 2017, Delrahim filed a lawsuit under Section 7 of the Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914 to block AT&T’s $85.4 billion acquisition of Time Warner. On June 12, 2018, U.S. District Judge Richard J. Leon rejected the government’s claims and refused to block the merger. The Department of Justice has since appealed this outcome.

Delrahim was a law student and worked for the Office of Technology Transfer, National Institutes of Health. He also worked on intellectual property issues at the Office of the United States trade Representative, Executive Office of the president. Delrahim joined Patton Boggs, a Washington, D.C., law firm, after law school. Delrahim was appointed counsel to the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary in 1998. He worked under Senator Orrin G. Hartch. Delrahim was an expert on antitrust and intellectual property issues, including the investigation into Microsoft and patent reform. Delrahim was later appointed Chief of Staff and Chief counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee until his 2003 appointment at the Department of Justice. Jon Leibowitz was President Obama’s Chairman for the Federal Trade Commission. He worked previously with Delrahim as an aide to the Democratic Senate Judiciary Committee and remembered him being creative and pragmatic.
