Mailis Reps is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 13, 1975 in Tallinn, Harju County, Estonia. Mailis Reps (nee Rand) was born in Tallinn on 13 January 1975. She is an Estonian politician and a member the Estonian Centre Party. From 2002 to 2003, 2005-2007 and 2016, she was the Minister of Education and Research.

Her role included being the Minister for merging two of Estonia’s most prestigious academic libraries, Tallinn Pedagogical University Library and Estonian Academic Library. Two days prior to the resignation of the government, the merger was signed on April 8, 2003.

Mailis Reps was heavily criticised after her official visit to the Mari-El Republic, a federal subject of Russia in August 2005. While several European (including Estonian) politicians have drawn attention to the discrimination of Mari people in this republic and issued statements on the topic, Mailis Reps spoke very positively about the current state of native inhabitants, their culture and education in her interview to Russian television. She later claimed that her statements were taken out of context by Russian TV and that her poor knowledge of Russian contributed to misunderstanding what she had actually meant.

Since 2005 she is also a Vice-Chairperson of the Estonian Centre Party.

Mailis Rand was appointed Estonian Minister for Education by Siim Kallas on 28 January 2002. Her youth and inexperience were often criticized. She was not able to solve many of the most important problems in Estonian education. However, she continued to fight for education funding and was elected Estonian Education Forum’s Friend of Education in October 2002. Mailis Rand changed the name of the Ministry of Education from the Ministry of Education and Research to reflect the centrality of the government institution in the administration of higher education and research activities.

She was one of the persons involved in preparing the controversial contract of co-operation between the Estonian Centre Party and Russian ‘party of the power’ United Russia in December 2004.
