Thowfeek, a candidate for the United National Front for Good Governance (UNFGG), in Trincomalee District at 2015’s parliamentary election, was not re- elected. He was however appointed as a UNFGG National List Member in Parliament after the resignation of A. R. A. Hafeez.
Thowfeek was one of the UNF candidates in Trincomalee District for the 2008 provincial election and was elected to Eastern Provincial Council. Thowfeek was one of the UNF candidates in Trincomalee District for the 2010 parliamentary elections. He was elected to Parliament and re-entered the House. In January 2015, he was elected Deputy Minister of Internal Transport.

Mohamed Shariff Thowfeek, a former deputy minister and member of the Sri Lankan Parliament, was born 7 January 1971.
Thowfeek was one of the People’s Alliance’s candidates (PA) in Trincomalee District for the 2000 parliamentary elections. He was elected to Parliament. In June 2001, the alliance between the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and the PA collapsed and the SLMC joined opposition United National Front (UNF) in October 2001. Thowfeek, who was one of UNF’s Trincomalee District candidates at the 2001 parliamentary elections, failed to win re-election. After the election, he was elected as a UNF National List Member of Parliament. After being third among the SLMC candidates, he ran for the 2004 parliamentary election in Trincomalee District as a SLMC Candidate. However, he was not able to win re-election.
