Lyubov Sirota is one of the most popular and richest Poet who was born on June 21, 1956 in Ertis, Kazakhstan. Lyubov Makarinna Sirota is a Ukrainian poet and writer. She was born June 21, 1956. She was a former resident of Pripyat, and was an eyewitness to the Chernobyl disaster. She can write in Russian and Ukrainian, as well as translating from Ukrainian to Russian and vice versa. Many languages have translated her poems, including English.
Despite her pain, Sirota’s poetry talent was enhanced by the experience. She wrote poetry to express her anger and grief, and published them in “Burden.” Burden was published in Kiev, Ukraine in 1990. Sirota lives there with her family. Sirota was a film editor at the film studio named Alexander Dovzhenko in Kiev. She reorganized “Prometheus” after her evacuation from Pripyat. This used poetry and music to tell the truth about Chernobyl and its inhabitants. Her work was hampered by repeated hospitalizations for fatigue and pain, which are typical effects of radiation exposure. Sirota was admitted to the hospital in 1992 as an invalid. However, she is determined to continue her fight against another Chernobyl.
Her own translations of the poetry of known Ukrainian poet Vasyl Stus in Russian have been issued in the book “Vasyl Stus. “And you same burn down” (Kiev, 2005).
Radiophobia (featured in Threshold and on radio) inspired Julio Soto (writer- director of the Spanish-American film Radiophobia) and artist Michael Genovese (painter of window frescoes containing the poem in the Ukrainian Village, Chicago, in 2006).
Her products were published after Chernobyl in these newspapers, almanacs of Ukraine: “The Truth Ukraine”,” “Literary Ukraine”, and “Independent Ukraine”, and “Your Health”, and “Ukrainian Forum”, and “Education”, and “Chernobyl Newspaper”, and “Post Chernobyl”, in the magazines “Ukraine”, Dnipro”, and “Extreme Situation”, and in the poetry collections: “Chernobyl. Days of tests (Kiev 1988), “Passing In a Zone” — The poetic anthology (Kiev 1996), “Chernobyl alongside …” (Kiev 2000), etc.

Sirota, along with her parents, moved to Ukraine in 1975. She received a degree from Dnipropetrovsk National University’s philology department in Russian language and literature. She moved to Pripyat in 1983 with her son Alexander. It is located 1.5km from the Chernobyl Atomic Power Station. Here she managed the literary group “Prometheus” as well as a literary studio. She was also the manager of the Palace of Culture’s “Energetik” department (literally the “energy plant worker”) Sirota directed and wrote two plays at the Palace of Culture: “We Couldn’t Not Find Each Other”, and “My Specialty – a Life”, a biography of Marina Tsvetaeva. This play was more popular and was to be repeated after the explosion of Chernobyl’s nuclear power station on April 26, 1986. Sirota and her child were among the thousands of people evacuated from the affected area after the disaster. Their lives were forever altered by the evacuation, the loss in friends and acquaintances and the radiation-induced assault on their health.
Sirota’s poetry was made more popular by Rollan Sergienko’s 1988 documentary about Chernobyl, Threshold, which she co-authored, and her 1990 anthology, Burden, published in Kiev.
Now her poems are known all over the world, thanks to the translations into English, German, Japanese, Italian, Polish (in Polish her lyrical poems have been published in the collective collection “Ukrainian Love Poetry”, Warszawa, 1991). But nevertheless her poetry became more known, thanking the long-term diligence of the professor of Washington University Paul Brians and his web page about Lyubov Sirota “The Chernobyl Poems of Lyubov Sirota”. So her poems have sounded in the National radio of America (program Terra Infirma), have been issued in English in such anthologies, almanacs, magazines and poetic collections of the US and Canada: “Life on the Line: Selections on Words and Healing”; “Perspectives from the Past”; “A Fierce Brightness: Twenty-Five Years of Women’s Poetry”, and also in the Canadian and American magazines: “Calyx”, “Woman World”, “Promin'”, “Journal of the American Medical Association”; “New York Quarterly”, “WISE”, “The Russell Record Magazine”, “The Modern Review”, “In Our Own Words”, etc.
