Lung Ying-tai is one of the most popular and richest Writer who was born on February 13, 1952 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Lung’s father Lung Huai Sheng (Long Huai Sheng), a Kuomintang army police officer, relocated his family to Taiwan in 1949 after the KMT lost China Civil War. She is the second child of her parents and she has four brothers. Lung’s first name, ying (Ying), is her mother’s name (Ying Mei Jun Ying Meijun). The second character, tai(Tai), is to indicate that she is the first child of the family to be born here.

In September 1999, she returned to Taiwan to be the first Director of Taipei’s Cultural Affairs Bureau. Her policies helped to increase the visibility of Taipei’s arts during her four-year tenure. In March 2003, she resigned to go back to writing. She felt that being an official was “suffocating.” It was difficult to breathe.”

She joined the Journalism and Media Studies Centre of the University of Hong Kong in August 2004. In July 2005, she established the Lung Ying-tai Cultural Foundation and used the foundation as a platform to sponsor literary and artistic endeavours as well as academic lectures. In 2007, Lung was offered a position on the seat on the Control Yuan which she refused. Since 2008 Lung Ying-tai has undertaken the position of Hung Leung Hao Ling Distinguished Fellow in Humanities of University of Hong Kong and Chair Professor of National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. She received the 2009 K.T. Li Chair Professor Award from NCKU.

In 2009, her book Watching You Go (Musong 目送) was published, becoming popular across Asia. The book is a collection of 74 works of prose narrating hardships and obstacles Lung has encountered, particularly in relation to her family.

She began writing an op ed column for China Times about Taiwan’s various circumstances after returning to Taiwan. In 1985, her essays were published in a book of socio-political criticism called “The Wild Fire” (Ye Huo Ji Ye Huo Ji). This was when Taiwan was still under Kuomintang’s one party rule. It cemented her position as an intellectual in Taiwan. Due to death threats and the response she received to her work, she moved to Germany in 1987. Her translated essays appeared in European newspapers like the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Since the 1990s, her work has been published in Chinese newspapers. Her essays include “Children Take Your Time”, “Silver Cactus”, and “Rise Of Thinking.” In 2006, she wrote “Please Use Civilization To Convince Me”, a letter to Hu Jintao after the temporary closure at Freezing Point. In an article entitled “Thank God, I Am Not Singaporean”, she criticised Lee Kuan Yew, Singaporean minister, and government restrictions on personal freedom in 1994.

Lung Yingtai is a Taiwanese essayist, cultural critic and Chinese Long Ying Tai (pinyin: Long Yingtai / Chinese: Long Ying Tai ) was born 13 February 1952 in Kaohsiung. Sometimes she writes under the pseudonym ‘Hu Meili’ (Hu Mei Li; Hu Mei Li; Hu Meili). Lung’s insightful and critical essays helped to democratize Taiwan.
