Luke Del Rio is the son of Jack Del Rio and was born in Minneapolis on November 6, 1994. After his father’s 2012 hire by the Denver Broncos, he attended Episcopal School of Jacksonville, Florida, where he was the head coach of Jacksonville Jaguars. He then transferred to Valor Christian High School, Highlands Ranch, Colorado, for his senior year. In his senior year, Del Rio rushed for 2,275 yards and scored 28 touchdowns.

Del Rio started the 2017 season behind Feleipe Franks, who was also the top backup. Del Rio was called to the bench after the offense struggled against Kentucky and led the Gators’ comeback win. Del Rio was selected as the starting quarterback against Vanderbilt the next week. Del Rio broke his collarbone in the second quarter and was out of the game for the remainder of the season. Del Rio declared in November 2017 that he would forgo his sixth and final year eligibility to end his college football career.

Del Rio, who had been unable to play in 2015 because of transfer rules was named Florida’s starting quarterback in 2016. Del Rio sustained a knee injury while making a blindside catch in the third game against North Texas. This forced Del Rio out of the next two games. Also, he had suffered an AC joint strain in his throwing shoulder in the North Texas match. This hampered his ability to play after he recovered from injury. Del Rio was able to return from his injury in time to face Missouri on October 15. He suffered a torn labrum one week later while playing against Georgia. Del Rio suffered injuries after he lost against Arkansas 31-10 on November 5. He was unable to practice for spring 2017 after undergoing shoulder surgery.
