Eugene Tapahonso Sr. was born to Lucille Deschenne Tapahonso. Tapahonso was not able to speak English at home, so she learned it as a second language after learning it in her native Navajo. After graduating from Shiprock High School in 1971, she continued her education at the Navajo Methodist School, Farmington, New Mexico. After graduating from Navajo Methodist School in Farmington, New Mexico, she began a career as an investigative reporter and journalist. She then started her University of New Mexico studies in 1976. She met Leslie Marmon Silko (a professor) and was an influential figure in Tapahonso’s early writing. At first, she wanted to study journalism at New Mexico. But Silko convinced Tapahonso to switch to creative writing. In 1980, she earned her bachelor’s degree. Tapahonso earned her MA in Creative Writing in 1983. She then began teaching at New Mexico, Kansas, and Arizona.

Tapahonso’s first story, “The Snake Man”, was published by Silko in 1978. One More Shiprock Night, her first collection of poetry (compiled while she was still a student), was published in 1981. It did not have much impact. Tapahonso follows Silko’s example and her early work is often mystical. She places a lot of importance on the notion of the feminine as a source for power and balance in the universe. Tapahonso also often uses childhood friends and family members in her poetry. There were many more collections and individual poems that followed.
