Burnett would continue to play for the Nanooks two more seasons. This was in addition to his regular appearances and his major in Psychology/Criminal Justice. Fairbanks would see him ice on 78 more occasions. He scored 28 points and impressed coaches with his hard work. Burnett served as the alternate captain of the team in 2005-06, and he performed so well that he was made full captain for the final term.

Despite being a late addition to the squad, Burnett gelled quickly and would end the season with 44 points in 56 games. During the season he would alternate between the second and third offensive lines. Manchester would qualify for both domestic cup finals as well as making the post-season during a successful 2008–09 season. Despite this, financial problems would continue to dog the organisation and as a result, owner Neil Morris announced in the close season that Manchester would play in the EPL for the 2009–10 season. The EPL has much stricter rules regarding foreign imports and also limits the operational budget and consequently Burnett along with most of the senior squad was released.

Burnett decided to play college hockey at NCAA level in 2003-04. He chose to play for the University of Alaska Fairbanks, also known as the Alaska Nanooks. Burnett would score his first NCAA career goal against Ferris State and would be crowned the game’s number one star. Burnett scored six points in his 35-game debut season. However, this would increase to 14 points in 37 games during the 2004-05 season. This season also saw Burnett elevated to the Nanooks power play unit.

Burnett was born in Rossland in British Columbia. He began his junior hockey career in 2000-01 with Beaver Valley Nitehawks. Burnett was a Nitehawks player in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. In 42 games, he scored 32 goals and 33 assists. Burnett was able to move up to the British Columbia Hockey League’s Trail Smoke Eaters in 2001-02, a Tier II A’ junior team.

Burnett again showed his offensive talent, scoring 11 goals and providing 18 assists. He also won the team’s “Most Improved” award. Burnett would remain with the Smoke Eaters during the 2002-03 season. His productivity increased again, scoring 24 goals and grabbing 28, for a total 53 points in 57 BCHL matches. Burnett was again honored with the award of the Smoke Eaters’ ‘Most Unsung player’.

Burnett’s dedication and effort earned him a spot with the Central Hockey League Tulsa Oilers for the 2007–08 season. He would instantly become a regular player for the Oilers, and featured in 59 regular season games. Burnett once again found his scoring touch in the process, scoring 36 points and totalling 83 penalty minutes. Despite this, his contract was not renewed, and Burnett found himself as a free agent in the summer of 2008.
