Nico was a member of the Halifax Mooseheads, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), and was selected by the New Jersey Devils as the 1st overall pick during the 2017 NHL Draft. Nina played high-level volleyball in Switzerland. Naters didn’t have any rinks so Katja took her two sons to Visp, where they learned to skate.

Hischier was a player in the SC Bern junior system and in his hometown EHC Visp. He made his NL debut in 2013 with Bern while also being a member SC Bern U20 team. Hischier signed his first professional contract with SC Bern on May 1, 2014. He then went on to play in the 2014/15 season of EHC Visp of Swiss League (SL). Hischier signed a two-year extension to his contract to stay in Bern for the 2017-18 season, while he was in the middle of his first full SC Bern season.
