Louise Pratt is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on April 18, 1972 in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Australia. Louise Clare Pratt, born 18 April 1972, is an Australian politician. She has been a senator for Western Australia since 2016 and previously from 2008 through 2014. She is a member the Labor Party and was a member the Western Australian Legislative Council between 2001 and 2007. At the time of her election she was the youngest female member of the Legislative Council. She was also the second openly lesbian to be elected as an Australian parliamentarian and the first woman to have a transgender partner.

Pratt started campaigning in mid-2006 for Labor preselection for the Senate seat for 2007. Pratt received broad cross-factional support and won a surprise victory in October. She was ranked first on the Labor ticket, ahead of Ruth Webber and Mark Bishop. Webber was then defeated at the general election, having been dropped to the third place. Pratt, who was the highest-placed Labor candidate in the Senate’s November 2007 election, resigned her Legislative Council seat. Batong Pham was previously a political staffer and was elected to Pratt’s former Legislative Council chair on 26 November 2007.

In the Senate, Pratt was made a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties, the Standing Committee on Economics, and the Standing Committee on Environment, Communications and the Arts. She made her first speech on 27 August 2008, in which she mentioned a range of policy issues with which was concerned: sexuality, the environment, foreign aid, immigration, social inclusion and workforce participation.

In September 2012 Pratt, along with three other Labor Senators co-sponsored a Bill to amend the Marriage Act (1961) and enable same-sex marriages to be recognised. The Bill was ultimately defeated, however Pratt’s impassioned speech in support of the Bill received widespread national and international attention. In December 2013, Pratt, along with Senators Sue Boyce (LNP) and Sarah Hanson-Young (The Greens) established a cross-party working group on marriage equality.

Pratt was less active in the media after the end of the law reform debate. Pratt received criticism from the state media for only making 24 speeches during her first 15 months as a member of parliament. She was still active in her role, taking up the issue on greenhouse emissions via her position on the Standing Committee on Environment and Public Affairs and advocating for midwife-led models in maternity care. After the 2005 state election she was re-elected comfortably and promoted to the chair of the Environment and Public Affairs Committee. Her interests in midwifery continued through her participation on the Public Obstetric Services Select Committee. She also served as Chair of State Government Adoption Legislation Review Committee. Pratt was again prominent in December 2005 when she argued for civil union legislation.

She also served as federal MP Carmen Lawrence. Pratt was elected to the third seat on the Labor ticket in the East Metropolitan Region during the 2001 state elections. Labor won the election, but not as expected. Pratt was elected to the last seat in the region and became the youngest ever woman elected to the Legislative Council.

Pratt was elected to the Legislative Council’s new term in May 2001. Her maiden speech, which included the suggestion that the voting age should be reduced to 16 years old, was noteworthy. However her first significant contribution was in July when she was elected to a Ministerial Committee on gay and lesbian legislation reform. This committee had broad authority to make recommendations about the elimination of discrimination within state law. Pratt and Giz Watson (lesbian Green MP) played an important role in the committee. It made many recommendations that were presented to the Western Australian parliament on the 2nd of August 2001. Acts Amendment (Lesbian and Gay Law Reform) Act 2002 was largely adopted by the committee’s recommendations. The act included a ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation, the granting to same-sex couples the right to adopt children, a lower age limit of 21 years, the right to inherit from a deceased partner and the repealing of legislation that made it an offense to promote homosexuality at schools.

Pratt was born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Her father was born in Devon, England, and she was a British citizen by descent until renouncing it prior to the 2007 election. Pratt grew up in the outer hills suburbs of Perth, where she attended Eastern Hills Senior High School. She studied arts at the University of Western Australia, where she became involved in student politics. After taking on a number of positions at her campus, she was elected as the state education officer for the National Union of Students, as well as a member of its national executive, in 1994.
