His role in LGBT issues has been long-lasting and been a major part of his professional career. He was the lead in the legal battle to invalidate Kentucky’s law against sodomy and also an unsuccessful legislative battle against constitutional amendments that restore the law. Scorsone was able to successfully amend the penal code of Kentucky to include, for the first time the law contained a hate crime provision in relation to sexual orientation. He also assisted in the development of the campaign for an equality ordinance in Lexington to ensure the safety of the rights of employees, housing, and accommodation. He was able to successfully petition and create a gubernatorial executive decree in 2003 that protected LGBT State employees against discrimination.
On August 7, 2008, Governor Steve Beshear appointed Scorsone as Fayette Circuit Court Judge. In November of that year, he was elected to the post without opposition. Among other accomplishments as a circuit judge, he initiated a conciliation conference process to avoid home foreclosures in Fayette County.
In March 2016, the Kentucky Department of Health and Family Service’s claim, as argued by Louisville attorney and general counsel to the Kentucky office of Kentucky’s governor Matt Bevin, that the clinic was operating in unsanitary conditions and conducting abortions without an ambulance agreement, which both health inspection and an ambulance agreement are both required of all facilities that solely perform abortions. The defense attorney, Mr. Scott White, asserted that the EMW provides other necessary women’s care that would classify the clinic as a general health facility, not an abortion clinic, including providing mammograms and other care.
In 1998, Scorsone had been the Democratic candidate for the open seat in the 6th district of the United States House of Representatives however his defeat in the general election against Republican Ernie Fletcher by seven points (53%-46 percentage). Fletcher went on to become Governor.

Scorsone received an undergraduate degree from his home at the University of Kentucky in 1973 and earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Kentucky College of Law in the year 1976. After a period of work as a public defender and private practice, he started his own in Lexington in 1977.

In 1996 the year he became a member of the Kentucky Senate from the 13th District and re-elected without opposition in 2004 and 2000.
