Louise Bernice Halfe is one of the most popular and richest Poet who was born on April 8, 1953 in Two Hills, Alberta, Canada. Louise Halfe was conceived on April 8, 1953. Sky Dancer is her Cree name. She was born in Two Hills (Alberta) and was raised on the Saddle Lake Reserve. Louise was seven years old when she was forced to go to Blue Quills Residential School, St. Paul, Alberta. She stayed there for nine years. She left her home at sixteen and ended all ties with her family. She was able to finish her education at St. Paul’s High School. Halfe was a high school student and discovered a passion for writing. Halfe started a journal to record her life experiences and memories.
Halfe was named Saskatchewan’s Poet-Laureate in 2005. Halfe is the second recipient of the title. In 2012, Halfe was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters by Wilfrid Laurier University. She is currently acting Elder at University of Saskatchewan.
Halfe titled her book Blue Marrow to invoke the image of using a bone writing in blue ink. The title re-appropriates the “blue quill” of Blue Quills Residential School. Much of Halfe’s poetry reflects on her time at the school and the effect it had on her, her family, and her community.
Halfe writes poetry about the women that have come before her. Her writing focuses on the kinship relations between women, the stories women have to tell, and their histories. Halfe’s poetry reasserts the importance of women in Cree culture.
In 1996, her first collection of poetry, Bear Bones & Feathers won the Milton Acorn People’s Poet Award. Blue Marrow was nominated to the Pat Lowther First Book Award. Blue Marrow was nominated for the Pat Lowther First Book Award in 1998. In 2008, the Crooked Good won the First Peoples Publishing Award as well as the Saskatoon Books Award. In the same year, it was also nominated to the Poetry Award in Anne Szumigalski’s honour. Halfe was also shortlisted to receive the Spirit of Saskatchewan Award. 2017 saw Burning in This Midnight Dream win the Indigenous Peoples’ Publishing Award, the Rasmussen Ramussen & Charowsky Indigenous Peoples’ writing award, and the Saskatchewan Arts Board Poetry Award. Burning in This Midnight Dream was also awarded the League of Canadian Poets Raymond Souster Award, and the High Plains Book Award to Indigenous Writers. The 2017 WILLA Literacy Award Finalist in Poetry was Burning in this Midnight Dream.
