In 1986, Reid took over as the lead singer and guitarist of the Seldom Scene from Phil Rosenthal. Reid was part of the Seldom Scene for six-years, and then left for Nashville in 1993 to tour with Vince Gill & Vern Gosdin.
In 1994, Lou Reid and Carolina received the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Emerging Artist of the Year award. In 1995, the album Carolina Moon was nominated for Album of the Year by the IBMA.
Carolina’s first album Carolina Blue was followed in 1995 by Carolina Moon. Then Baucom left the band to pursue his own career.
Reid played a variety of instruments and provided harmony vocals with Ricky Skaggs Band between 1982 and 1986.

Reid was an acoustic guitarist in his teens. He then joined Bluegrass Buddies’ bluegrass band Southbound and recorded one album for Rebel Records. From 1973 to 1979, he played banjo for them. The other members were Jimmy Haley (guitar), Dennis Severt, and Doug Campbell (bass).
Lou joined Doyle Lawson in 1979 to play bass guitar. Quicksilver was comprised of Lawson (mandolin), Reid, Terry Baucom (banjo), Jimmy Haley (guitar), and Reid (bass). Quicksilver recorded three albums by Reid.
In 1992, Lou Reid formed his band Carolina in with lifelong friend Terry Baucom and Marcus Smith (bass).
