Loren Legarda was the only child of Antonio Cabrera Legarda (Bessie Gella Bautista) and Lorna Regina Bautista Legarda. She was born in Malabon on January 28, 1960 as Lorna Regine Bautista Legarda. Jose P. Bautista was her maternal grandfather and editor-in-chief at The Manila Times, a pre-Martial Law newspaper. She was a model for television and print as a teenager.

In 1989, Lorna Regina Bautista Legarda married former Batangas Governor Antonio Leviste. They had two sons, Lorenzo “Lanz”, Leviste and Leandro (“Lean”) Leviste. Solar Philippines is the nation’s largest producer and manufacturer of renewable energy. Legarda and Leviste split in 2003, and their marriage was annulled by the courts in 2008.

Legarda ran for the Senate in 1998 under the Lakas-NUCD-UMDP Party. She was elected with more than 15 million votes, allowing her to be the highest vote- getter in that year’s election and becoming the second woman to top a Philippine senatorial election. After Legarda filed her candidacy as senator in late 1997, Tina Monzon-Palma who came from rival ABC and was the anchor of The Big News, transferred to ABS-CBN in order to replace her on The World Tonight at the same time and joining Angelo Castro, Jr. in order to run the latter for this election. In 1999, the newscast was replaced by Pulso: Aksyon Balita on ABS-CBN and was moved to the ABS-CBN News Channel and until now, the newscast is still airing.

From primary school to high school she attended Assumption College, where she was grade school valedictorian. In 1981, she graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s in broadcast communications from the University of the Philippines Diliman. She was also President of the UP Broadcast Association. She completed post-graduate studies in special subjects to obtain a professional journalism degree from the University of California Los Angeles.
