She is an internationally recognized Australian operatic soprano. Her performances of Wagner are well- known. In 1991, she won the Cardiff Singer of the World contest. Due to neuro- muscular spasms in the neck, she was unable to perform between 2008 & 2011.

The 1999 Bayreuth Scholarship was given to Lisa Gasteen by the Opera Foundation. She was awarded the Myer Foundation’s Individual Performer Award in 2002. In 2004, she was named the Arts Category Winner of Bulletin Magazine’s Smart 100 series. She was made an Officer of Australia (AO) in the 2006 Australia Day Honours.

In 2008 she was forced to suspend her singing career due to neuro-muscular spasms in her neck. She returned to the stage in May 2011, in a recital with Simone Young on piano. In August 2013, she made her return to the Sydney Symphony, performing Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder.

Lisa Gasteen is currently on the staff of the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University as a singing teacher and Practice Professor of Opera. In 2011, she founded the Lisa Gasteen National Opera School, an intensive, four- week summer school with international guest coaches.

Following her 1991 win in the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition Lisa Gasteen was invited by Sir Charles Mackerras to perform Donna Anna in Prague. She then made her British debut as Leonora in the new production of Il trovatore at Scottish Opera in 1992. She was then invited to perform in Europe as well as the United States with companies such as Deutsche Oper Berlin and Staatsoper Berlin, Welsh National Opera, Scottish Opera, and with the opera companies of Dallas, Dallas, Zurich and Strasbourg. In 1997, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Aida. These roles include Leonora (Il trovatore with Rizzi), Laforza del destino and Fidelio. She also played Aida (with Zubin Mahta), Tosca (with Zubin Metta), Aida (with Andrea Chenier), Aida (with Zubin Medhta), Tosca (with Zubin Mehta), Tosca (with Zubin Méhta), Tosca (Ariadne auf Naxos), and Chrysothemis) At the 1996 Melbourne International Arts Festival, she made her debut as Die Kaiserin (Die Frau unbe Schatten).

Born in Brisbane, Lisa Gasteen studied music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. In 2004, she made her role debut as Senta in The Flying Dutchman with Opera Australia, performed Sieglinde (Die Walküre) at the Metropolitan Opera, Elektra in concert with the Cleveland Orchestra, Isolde in Stuttgart Opera’s new production of Tristan und Isolde and Brünnhilde in State Opera of South Australia’s new production of the Ring under Asher Fisch, for which she has received another Helpmann Award. 2005 engagements included Brünnhilde in the Ring Cycle for the Vienna Staatsoper (making her house debut) under Simone Young and for the Royal Opera House in the company’s new production under Antonio Pappano, as well as Isolde for Opéra Bastille Paris. In Australia she performed Isolde for the Queensland Music Festival and she was honoured with a third Helpmann Award for this performance. 2006 included a return to the Royal Opera House to perform Brünnhilde and Elektra at Tanglewood Festival.
