Police escorted Abbate and his wife to the police station after they heard that mafiosi had been discussing ways to silence him in retaliation for his news reports.
Two men placed a homemade bomb under his car on the night of September 2nd 2007, and his police bodyguards caught them. The murder attempt occurred just days after he returned to Palermo, and several months after threats had been made about his book.

He was born in Castelbuono, in the province Palermo. He began his journalistic career at Giornale Di Sicilia in 1990. He also began working for La Stampa in 1998. Unione Nazionale Cronisti (Unci) elected him journalist of the Year in 2003. He covered the Mafia in Sicilia as well as clandestine immigration. He was the sole journalist to witness Bernardo Provenzano’s arrest in April 2006. After 43 years on the run, Provenzano was finally caught.

Despite the threats and police escort Abbate has not left Palermo. “If I left after they put a bomb under my car, I would be setting a bad example to other Sicilians,” he said. “This way I am showing that I am not afraid, that the state is protecting me, and that I will carry on.” In 2009, however, Abbate left Palermo to work in Rome.
