Lio Biography

Lio is one of the most popular and richest Actor who was born on June 17, 1962 in Mangualde, Viseu District, Portugal. Lio, born Vanda Maria Ribeiro Furtado Tapado de Vasconcelos on 17 June 1962 is a Luso–Belgian actress and singer who was a pop idol in France and Belgium in the 1980s.

In 1990 and 1991 she appeared in three films, Chambre a Part, Sans un cri and Apres l’amour. Etienne Daho produced her 1991 album Des fleurs pour un cameleon. She had previously contributed vocals to “Weekend in Rome”, one of Daho’s earliest and most popular hits. Daho was allowed to work in the studio while Lio was filming a movie. However, he didn’t want to promote the album with her and that limited its success. In 1995, her next album, Wandatta was released. It featured a maturer approach to music than her previous images and featured a sleeve by Guy Peellaert. It was a failure and she retreated to Angouleme with her children and partner. She recorded in Cuba with Esteban in 1998 and appeared in 50 performances in the French version of Seven Brides For Seven Brothers in 1999, a musical performed at the Folies Bergere. That year, she had two children. In 2000, she released “Je suis comme moi suis” and the album Chante Prevert, which contains interpretations of the poems by Jacques Prevert. She released the live album Coeur de rubis, which she recorded after performing the songs in France, Europe, and North Africa. Marc Goldberg also staged the play Le Bebe, a adaptation of Marie Darrieussecq’s book. She performed more than 250 times.

As of 2012, several of Lio’s songs (like her 1982 song “Mona Lisa”) have been rediscovered and used as samples in numerous songs by artists in the Nu-disco, House and EDM genres. In 2014, she gave an acoustic rendition of several songs by the Brazilian composer Dorival Caymmi at the Archiduc café in central Brussels.

In March 2018, she released her new album Lio Canta Caymmi on the label Crammed Discs. It consists of half-Portuguese, half-French covers of songs by the Brazilian composer Dorival Caymmi. It was the first time she recorded an entire album in Portuguese, her mother tongue. She had previously released a cover of the Brazilian standard “The Girl from Ipanema” in 1991 but she sang the English lyrics.

She met Michel Esteban (ZE Records) in 1985. Esteban was a producer and executive at the record company. She had hit singles in Europe including “Les Brunes comptent paspour des prunes”, so she travelled to Los Angeles to record her next album, Pop model. John Cale, formerly from the Velvet Underground, co-produced several tracks. The album produced the hits “Fallait pas beginnen”, “Je casse tous ce que je touche”, as well as “Chauffeur”. After giving birth to Esteban’s daughter in 1988, she returned to acting and starred in Claude Lelouch’s Itineraire d’un enfant gates. Can can was another album produced by the Lio-Esteban collaboration, which was recorded in Los Angeles as well as Rio de Janeiro. Her fashion line was also created for the European department store chain Prisunic.

Vanda Maria Ribeiro Furtado Tavares de Vasconcelos was born in Mangualde, Portugal. Her family moved to Mozambique when her father was called to service in the Portuguese Army. After her parents divorced, Vanda moved to Belgium with her mother and stepfather in 1968. There, she met Helena Noguerra (an actress). She was determined to be a singer in her teens and was encouraged by Jacques Duvall (ne Eric Verwilghem), a close family friend. Her stage name, Lio was inspired by Jean-Claude Forest’s Barbarella comic book.

Jay Alanski, a songwriter, and Duvall started working together in 1979 with Marc Moulin, and Dan Lacksman, from the electro-trio Telex. “Le Banana Split”, sold more than 1 million copies. “Amoureux solitaires”, originally written by Stinky Toys, was also a hit. Both songs reached the top of French pop charts. Moulin and Lacksman also released her first album, titled “Le Banana Split”. The album Suite sixtine was produced by Ron Mael and Russell Mael of Sparks in

1982. Some of her songs were also translated into English. Ralph Alfonso, who was also the art director for Suite sixtine, created it and released it on Attic Records Canada. Alain Chamfort produced her second album, Amour toujours. It was released in 1983. In the same year, she made her debut in Chantal Akerman’s film Golden Eighties. This lighthearted and humorous French pop musical is about people who work in a Parisian shopping mall. In the movie, Lio portrays a relaxed hairdresser.

Since 2008, Lio has been a judge on the French “pop idol” show Nouvelle Star. In 2009, she returned to music with the rock band Phantom. In 2011, she became a judge on The Voice Belgique.
