On February 23, 2006, Bellomo and over 30 Genovese family members were indicted on more racketeering charges. Bellomo was specifically charged with ordering the 1998 murder of Ralph Coppola, the acting captain of Bellomo’s crew and Bellomo’s good friend. On September 16, 1998, Coppola disappeared a few weeks before his sentencing on fraud charges and was never found. Government witness Peter Peluso, a former lawyer for the Genovese family, stated that he had transported a message from Bellomo in prison ordering Coppola’s murder. Some accounts state that Coppola was disrespectful, others say that he was stealing family profits.

On December 1, 2008, Bellomo was released from prison after serving 12 years.

In February 1997, the prosecutors dropped the murder charges against DeSimone & DiLorenzo and gave Bellomo an opportunity to plead guilty for extorting money from a construction union or a garbage hauling business. Bellomo accepted and was sentenced for 10 years.

LIBORIO S. BELLOMO a/k/a Barney Bellomo was the defendant. He was, at different times, a Soldier and Capo as well as Acting Boss for the Genovese Organized Crime Family. BELLOMO was a Soldier in Genovese Family before becoming Acting Boss for the Genovese Organized Crime Family around 1992. He then became a powerful Capo who managed a team of Soldiers and their associates, based in Bronx, New York. BELLOMO had control over the labor unions that were associated with Manhattan’s Jacob Javits Convention Center. BELLOMO was appointed Acting Boss for the Genovese Organized Crime Family around 1992 after the incarceration Genovese Family Boss Vincent Gigante. BELLOMO was incarcerated in or around 1996 after he was convicted of Federal criminal charges. Even after his imprisonment, BELLOMO was re-elected as Acting Boss. He retained considerable power and authority in the Genovese Organized Crime Family. He continued to be consulted about and make decisions regarding the Genovese Family’s criminal activities. BELLOMO was sentenced in 1997 to 10 years imprisonment after he was convicted on Federal extortion. BELLOMO was convicted of the 1998 murder by Ralph Coppola (Genese Family Soldier, Acting Capo), and he also participated in two schemes to obstruct justice: one by conspiring with a potential witness and the second by giving false and misleading testimony during a grand juror proceeding.

After Vincent Gigante was indicted in the Windows Case in 1990, Bellomo became the acting boss of Genovese families. Bellomo was charged with Racketeer Influenced And Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), including the murders by Ralph DeSimone, Antonio DiLorenzo and extortion. DiLorenzo was shot to death in his backyard in West New York, New Jersey. DeSimone, who was shot five times, was found in his car at LaGuardia Airport. Genovese leaders believed that DeSimone, and DiLorenzo, were government informants.

On July 13, 2001, the imprisoned Bellomo was indicted on money laundering charges related to the Genovese family’s involvement in the waterfront rackets and control of the ILA. Bellomo was accused of hiding money stolen from the ILA’s members pension fund account between 1996 and 1997. Bellomo again pleaded guilty to lesser charges, pushing back his scheduled release date in 2004.
