From 2005 to 2009 Liam Middleton served as Director of Rugby at Cheltenham RFC. He guided them to promotion in the National Leagues in 2009. The team also scored the most league tries ever recorded in Club history.
Following this he joined Bristol Rugby Club (BRFC) in June 2009 as Academy Manager where his reputation for identifying and developing talented players was created. The Academy process established by Middleton produced 13 Bristol 1stXV status and notably England and British and Irish Lions prop Mako Vunipola. During the 2010 season Middleton assisted Paul Hull in the coaching of the Bristol 1st XV where they were winners of the British and Irish Cup, beating Bedford Blues in the final. In July 2011 Liam was promoted to Head Coach of Bristol Rugby Club. Known as an innovative and tactically astute coach, he guided the Bristol First team from 8th place in the RFU Championship to 1st place, topping the league by 7 clear points. During his time in charge he led the Club on their longest run of home victories in the club’s history, and boasted an unbeaten record against perennial Championship performers Bedford Blues.
In September 2012 he was named as an Assistant Coach for the Championship XV to play against the New Zealand Maoris, but withdrew due to family commitments.
From June 2004 to December 2010, Liam Middleton served as the Zimbabwe 7s Team’s Head Coach. He is best known as the ‘Cheetahs,’ and he helped to develop the National 7s team into an internationally competitive team in the World Sevens Series. Middleton was the Cheetahs’ coach to the 2009 Rugby World Cup 7s, Dubai. They won an impressive 4 of 6 games and reached the Bowl Final against Ireland. He was appointed Head Coach of the Great Britain Students 7s Team for the 2006 World University Games in Rome. The team won the Silver medal. - He also won the title of the All Black Sevens Team Coach at the Tokyo 7s in 2015. The feat was repeated in Cape Town in December 2015. Middleton led Canada 7s to a Gold Medal at Pan Am Games in July 2015. He was the host nation’s first home tournament at the Vancouver leg in the World Sevens Series in 2016. The team won all five remaining matches, including the Bowl Final victory over France, despite a narrow loss in the opening match.

In 2000, Liam began his coaching career at Howick High School in KwaZulu Natal.
He left South Africa in January 2002 to join the Hartpury College Rugby Academy coaching staff. This joint venture was between the college and the Premiership club Gloucester RFC, Gloucestershire, England. He is the Performance Manager. Allan Lewis, a former Wales assistant coach, was his Hartpury 1stXV coach. The Academy 1stXV won three consecutive British University Championships and also the college’s first University Sevens title. The Academy produced nine fully capped international players, including one British and Irish Lion as well as several International 7s players. Middleton was also the coach of the British Colleges and England Colleges teams while at Hartpury.
In 2008 the RFU created a new Talent Identification role, Liam was employed in this role in 2008.
