Li Yinhe Biography

Li Yinhe is one of the most popular and richest Sociologist who was born on February 4, 1952 in Beijing, China. Li Yinhe was originally born in Beijing as Li Sanfan in 1952. At seven years old, her name was changed from Li Sanfan to Li Yinhe. Chen Erdong, her father, was the director at People’s Daily of the department for theories. Her mother was an editor. Li is the elder sister of two and has one brother. As a result of her parents’ belief in gender equality, Li and her brother adopted a matrilineal surname.

Li was married to Wang Xiaobo who was a well-known Chinese novelist. He died in 1997. Li traveled to the USA alone in 1982. Wang joined her on a scholarship for East Asia Studies in 1984. In December 2014, Li disclosed that she was in a long-term relationship (with Zhang Hongxia, a transgender man) with Zhang Hongxia. 1965, for 15 years.

In 2001, Li have asked a deputy to National People’s Congress (NPC) to submit her proposal. But in the end the deputy wasn’t able to submit the proposal in that a proposal concerning amendment to laws needs signatures from 30 other deputies to be accepted and she couldn’t find that many people who would put their names to the document.

Starting from 2002, Li kept asking members of National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) to submit her proposal.

Li graduated from Shanxi University and worked as an editor for Guangming Daily. Li was then assigned to a research position at State Council Research Office in 1978. She gained national fame for publishing “To substantially encourage democracy, to substantially foster the rule of law” together with Lin Chunhe. 1979 saw Li join the Institute of Marxism-Leninism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), where her research focused on the marriage and family. Li received her doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh, and returned to China. She worked as a postdoctoral fellow under Fei Xiaotong (then an instructor at Peking University). She joined the Institute of Sociology of CASS in 1992 as a researcher and then became the Director of the Research Office of Family and Sexuality. She was employed at CASS from 1992 to 2012, when she retired.
