Li was transferred to China League Two club Hainan Seamen in March 2016.

Li Gang left Shenhua to join Chengdu Blades as a loanee during the 2009 league season. He quickly became a regular in the team and played in ten league matches for the club. It was discovered that Chengdu Blades had been involved in fixing league games for several years prior to 2010’s league season. They were then punished with relegation from the second tier. However, Li Gang made his loan permanent and he would participate in 17 league games. This was to help the club win promotion after the 2010 league season. He also helped the club reach a runners up position. Li Gang was again named club captain in the Chinese Super League season 2011. However, he was unable lead the team to safety and was eventually relegated.

Li Gang would begin his football career in 2002 at Dalian Saidelong, a local club in Dalian. He would play in twenty-three league games during the 2003 league season and establish himself as a regular member of the team. The club would move to Shanghai, where he would see it renamed Shanghai United F.C. The club was promoted to the Chinese Super League at the conclusion of 2004 league season. They had also finished second in the league. Li Gang would establish himself and his team when his team finished eleventh in league. Shanghai United F.C. was the first to enter the 2007 league season. Shanghai Shenhua and Shanghai Shenhua were merged, but their names remained the same.

Shanghai Shenhua’s Li Gang made his debut against Sydney FC on March 7, 2007. Shanghai Shenhua lost 2-1 in that group game of the 2007 AFC Champions League. Osvaldo Gimenez, the former Shanghai United coach, managed the team. Li Gang played in 15 league games and won the A3 Champions Cup. This was a mini- tournament held during the East Asian Football Federation’s summer break. Wu Jingui, the Shenhua manager at the start of 2008 league season, was already back. Despite the high number of players in the league, Li Gang saw his playing time reduced to just five league appearances during the season.
