American epidemiologist Les Roberts was born in 1961. He was the first recipient of the Centers for Disease Control’s Paul C. Schnitker award for his contributions to global health. His study that estimated that 100,000 civilians were killed in the war in Iraq was a major news story just before the 2004 U.S. Presidential election. This was at a time when official U.S. Government counts were much lower. The report was confirmed by a follow-up study in 2006. President George W. Bush rejected it. He said that the approach was “pretty well discredited”.

An official Ministerial Statement by the United Kingdom Parliament reaffirmed the claims made in the study. It stated that “the Government don’t accept its [The Lancet study] central conclusion”. The statement noted that the Ministry of Health figures for Iraq, which were compiled from daily hospital reports, had shown that 3,853 civilians died and 15,517 were injured between April 5 and October 5. 2004.

Roberts campaigned for office in 2006, running in the Democratic primary for the U.S. House of Representatives seat of the 24th Congressional District in Chenango County, New York. He withdrew from the running on May 17 and endorsed Michael Arcuri, who was later elected.

This second study drew criticism from a number of sources. Members of the Iraqi government, the Iraq Body Count Project, and a number of other researchers all disputed the estimated figures from 2006.

We estimate that 654,965 additional Iraqis died between March 18, 2003 and June 6, 2006 (392,979-942636), which is more than would be expected based on the pre-invasion crude death rate. This was due to the coalition’s invasion. We estimate that 601,027 (42,369-793.663) of these deaths were caused by violence.

Roberts was born in Onondaga, New York. He graduated from Westhill Senior High School (1979). In 1983, he received a St. Lawrence University undergraduate degree in Physics and Tulane University’s master’s in public health in 1986. After completing a post-graduate fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta, he received a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. He has been a regular lecturer since then. He is currently an Associate Clinical Professor of Population and Family Health in Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.

Roberts was the Director of Health Policy for the International Rescue Committee. He worked in Rwanda as a World Health Organization Director and conducted a similar study to determine the number of Rwandan refugees. He also conducted a similar study in 2000 that estimated that 1.7 million people had died from the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This study was used in a U.N. Security Council resolution requiring all foreign armies to leave Congo. The United Nations requested $140 million in assistance and the US State Department pledged $10 million more.

In 2004 Roberts was the lead investigator in the field and lead author of a study, co-authored with four others, titled “Mortality before and after the 2003 invasion of Iraq: cluster sample survey,” published in The Lancet. In the study, he estimated that 100,000 Iraqi civilians had been killed in the Iraq war at a time when official U.S. government estimates were much lower.
