Les Boyd is one of the most popular and richest Rugby League Player who was born on November 17, 1956 in Nyngan, New South Wales, Australia. Boyd was born in Nyngan (New South Wales) on 17th November

  1. He later attended Nyngan High School. He played in the 1972 Australian Schoolboys team under Roy Masters, his future coach at Western Suburbs.

Boyd, playing for New South Wales, broke Darryl Brohman’s jaw with his elbow while playing in the first game of the 1983 State of Origin series in Brisbane’s Lang Park. Rumours at that time suggested that Brohman would have been able to test for Australia three days later, had he not broken his jaw. That opportunity would not be available again. Referee Barry Gomersall didn’t send Boyd off, and only issued Queensland a penalty. Boyd was not cited in any way by the NSWRL. Boyd was selected for the Australian team for New Zealand’s test the next day, but was then forced to resign when Charlie Gibson, Secretary of Brohman’s club team Penrith officially cited him. Many, including Ted Glossop, the NSW coach, believed Boyd was unfairly treated by the Jim Comans-led judiciary, which suspended Manly forward Manly for twelve months. Comans was currently on a campaign against violence in rugby league. Many felt Boyd was used as a symbol of the campaign and the punishment far outweighed the crime.

Boyd played out the rest of his career in England with Warrington (Heritage No. 855). He played second-row, i.e. number 11, (replaced by interchange/substitute Kevin Tamati) in Warrington’s 8-34 defeat by Wigan in the 1985 Lancashire County Cup Final during the 1985–86 season at Knowsley Road, St. Helens, on Sunday 13 October 1985. He was man of the match winning the Harry Sunderland Trophy in Warrington’s 38-10 victory over Halifax in the Premiership Final during the 1985–86 season at Elland Road, Leeds on Sunday 18 May 1986. Boyd played left-prop, i.e. number 8, in Warrington’s 4-18 defeat by Wigan in the 1986–87 John Player Special Trophy Final during the 1986–87 season at Burnden Park, Bolton on Saturday 10 January 1987.

In 2000 Boyd was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for his contribution to Australia’s international standing in rugby league. Further honours came in September 2004 when he was named at lock in the Western Suburbs Magpies team of the century. Boyd currently works as a rep in the Riverina region of south western New South Wales for Lion Nathan.

He sued Mirror Newspapers Ltd in 1980 for publishing an article about him that said he was “fat, slow, and predictable”. Boyd was selected to be the Kangaroos’ second-row forward during the 1982 New Zealand rugby league tour through Australia and Papua New Guinea. Boyd was also part of the 1982 Kangaroos undefeated side, which became known as “The Invincibles”. He was a second-row forward in most cases, but he played all three Tests against Great Britain in front row. He scored a try at Boothferry Park, Hull. Julian Rascagneres, a French referee sent Boyd off for hard running forward in the first test at Central Park in Wigan. He was penalized for kicks to John Dalgreen, Lions Hooker. Rascagneres should be credited for calling a penalty against Boyd because he was unable to tackle the tackle correctly and was looking downfield. He missed Dalgreen, who was lying on his back, and he lashed out at Boyd with the boot. Television replays clearly show that Boyd kicked Boyd in the shin. The English-based touch judge reported Boyd’s retaliation. Ray French, a BBC commentator, called Boyd’s retaliation “vicious kick”, even though it seemed he also missed Dalgreen’s action. The Kangaroos didn’t feel Boyd’s sendoff. They led 15-4 at the moment and won the match 27-6. This was in addition to retaining the Ashes that they held since 1978 Kangaroo tours and preserving their record of never losing a series in England from 1959-60 Kangaroo tours.
