Lee Yeongdo is one of the most popular and richest Science Fiction Writer who was born on July 21, 1972 in BUnited Statesn, South Korea. Lee was born in the year 1972, on the island of Busan, South Korea, the second child from two siblings. When Lee was just two years old, his family relocated from Busan to Masan within South Gyeongsang Province where he has been since. As a youngster, Lee often read in different disciplines. In 1991, he was accepted into Kyungnam University where he studied Korean literature and language.

Lee’s Dragon Raja world and its principal characters have been utilized as the basis of an MMORPG, Dragon Raja Online also known as DRO. The game’s development began in 1998, thanks to the involvement of Samsung Electronics, and was launched at the end of 2000 South Korea, and later in 10 other countries, including Taiwan as well as China under the name of Long Zu . In China, the novel was published with the same title, and promoted along to the games. Following a string of M&A of the company it was developing through the years the DRO’s Korean service was shut down in the year 2011. In 2011, the English versions of the game is accessible here, and the global version remains online. (August 2011)

Lee’s publisher Golden Bough has run an online community from 1999 where the publisher and Lee’s fans discuss and actively participate in publication of Lee’s current and upcoming works. There the publisher ran limited edition campaigns for Polaris Rhapsody in 2000 and for Dragon Raja ‘s 10-year anniversary in 2008. In 2011, a campaign for the new hardback edition for Future Walker has been announced. In 2015, a new hardback edition for Polaris Rhapsody was released.

Outside the forum he published a short story Over the Horizon as an e-book in 2000, and wrote a series of children’s stories for RedPen study books published by Kyowon Co. Ltd.

Lee published Dragon Raja in October of 1997 until April 1998. Lee referred himself as a “typer” as he typed and didn’t write his work. The books quickly gained traction and Lee’s fans began waiting on the internet for Lee to upload the latest chapters. Lee generally posted his work late into the night but Lee’s followers began calling themselves zombies along with Lee the Necromancer was summoning them to the internet every evening. Over the course of its six-month run, Dragon Raja accumulated 900,000 hits. Its publishing rights were later acquired over by Golden Bough, an imprint of Minumsa Publishing Group. In May 1998 the novel was published in 12 volumes of paperback.

The mid-1990s were the time when science fiction and fantasy literature was becoming popular in Korea. Lee was able to recall the time when “if you asked people what is fantasy, they would say ‘Isn’t that like western martial arts'” in an interview from 2008. Lee was drawn to the genre and decided to create to tell a story using it. It was also the time that various online service providers that were similar to CompuServe in the United States (but different in its interface, which is only text-based) were forming. Lee joined one of these providers, Hitel, to start posting on its serial forum which would become some of the first chapter of Dragon Raja.

He began writing seriously in 1993, but didn’t anticipate that he’d be writing novels.

In the midst of his debut success, Lee began typing his second novel Future Walker, a sequel to Dragon Raja. Future Walker was serialised on the same forum from October 1998 to June 1999, and published in August by Golden Bough in 7 paperback volumes.

The popularization of HTTP and the Web browser caused the decline of Hitel and other commercial online services, and Lee’s readership on the forum was greatly reduced. But Lee continued to use Hitel forum to 2005, completing The Bird That Drinks Blood, the last of his multi-volume novels as of July 2014.
