Jong Song-ok is one of the most popular and richest Long-Distance Runner who was born on August 18, 1974 in South Hwanghae, North Korea. Jong Song-ok (Korean: jeongseongog ; born 18 August 1974) is a female long-distance runner as well as a political figure from North Korea, who won the title of world champion in the women’s marathon during the 1999 World Championships in Athletics in Seville, Spain. In the present, it’s the only gold medal ever awarded by an North Korean athlete at the World Championships.
Jong got married to fellow marathon runner Kim Jung-won in the month of March 2001. The 2008 Olympic torch relay held in Pyongyang she was the only individual to be carrying the Olympic torch across the streets.
The year 2000 was the first time Jong didn’t participate in in the Boston Marathon or the Summer Olympics in Sydney; South Korean media said that this was because of the personal instructions by North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. Jong became a delegates for the 10th Supreme People’s Assembly in March 2000.
