On the 20th of April, 2015. Lee announced his intention to quit as the Prime Minister following accusations of bribery. Lee formally resigned on April 27, 2015, apologizing for the scandal that Lee was accused of accepting an illegal cash payment from an entrepreneur. Park Geun-hye, the president of Korea, accepted Lee’s resignation.
Lee has been diagnosed as having a blood cancer. After his recovery Lee was elected an elected participant in the National Assembly at the 2013 by- election. He was elected to the National Assembly in 2014. was as the Floor Leader of the Saenuri Party.

Lee is a native of Cheongyang, Chungcheongnam-do. After graduation from Sungkyunkwan University, Lee worked as a public official within the Economic Planning Board (current Ministry of Strategy and Finance) and then transferred into the National Police Agency. From 1982 until 1984, Lee was a student at Michigan State University in the United States and received an M. A. in Criminal Justice. From 1986 until 1989, Lee was an consul in the Consulate General for the Republic of Korea in Los Angeles, United States.

Lee joined the New Korea Party(current Saenuri Party) and during the election of 1996 Lee was elected an elected Member of the National Assembly. In the election of 2006 the election, he was elected Governor of Chungcheongnam-do. He was removed as governor on the 23rd of December 2009.
On 23 January 2015, President Park Geun-hye named Lee as Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea. A three-term parliamentarian and former governor of South Chungcheong Province, Lee was confirmed by the National Assembly as Prime Minister on 16 February 2015. The National Assembly voted with 148 Yes, 128 No, and 5 Abstain. 155 Saenuri, 124 NPAD and 2 Independents participated in the vote.
