After playing as a player for their under 19 team and was then called up for the team’s first squad for the 2014 season , as they sought to be promoted in the League of Ireland Premier Division. Desmond was a regular in the team’s first squad, working at both centre-back and left-back during the entire season. His first score in the senior league on 23rd May 2014 , in an 1-1 draw away from Finn Harps. The season ended with a dreadful result however, as Shels did not get promoted after losing in the semi-finals to Galway in the semi-finals in The Promotion Playoffs, although Desmond was awarded his Shelbourne Players’ Player of the Year award following an extremely impressive first season as a senior player.

Desmond’s outstanding season at Shelbourne attracted the attention of Shels’ Dublin rivals and FAI Cup holders, St Patrick’s Athletic from the League of Ireland Premier Division. Desmond was announced to have joined the Saints on November 11, 2014, along with Jason McGuinness and Ciaran Kilduff. Desmond played throughout the entire season for Pats predominantly at centre-back , but also as right or left back when he was not Ian Bermingham or Ger O’Brien. He was a key player in numerous games, including in both of the UEFA Europa League games against Skonto Riga of Latvia. On the 19th of September, 2015, the left-back was named as the starter during the 2014 League of Ireland Cup Final against Galway United and won his first trophy of winners at the senior level, when the Saints triumphed on penalties following the match ended in a draw. In the Awards at the end of the season, the club voted him Youth Player of the year by St Pat’s supporters following a spectacular debut season.

Desmond played as a youth player with Malahide United Crumlin United as well as Cherry Orchard before being enlisted from English Premier League side Newcastle United and he was a part of their squad in their reserve and youth teams. He was let go from Newcastle at the conclusion of the 2012-2013 season, despite regularly playing in their development team. Desmond was signed by Shelbourne in July of 2013 after playing against them in a friendly game while trying out at Ipswich Town and impressed Shels manager Johnny McDonnell enough for him to give the youngster the opportunity to join the club. He was a member of the Shelbourne under 19s for the 2013-2014 season, before signing as a member of Shelbourne’s first team in November 2013. Desmond did well in games in such as winning 4-1 against Limerick at the time of the 2016 League Cup Final to help the Saints keep the trophy.

The 2017 season saw Pat’s involved in a relegation battle, with the team bottom of the table and struggling mid-season. Having played many games as a holding midfielder in the first half of the season, Desmond was returned to centre back and formed an excellent defensive partnership with mid-season signing Jordi Balk. The team’s form also picked up in the second half of the season as they managed to finish in 8th position with Desmond contributing heavily, playing in all but one of the club’s 33 league games.
