Lawrence Springborg is one of the most popular and richest Former Leader Of The Opposition who was born on February 17, 1968 in Inglewood, California, United States. Born in the year 1968, Lawrence Springborg resided in the town of Yelarbon for the majority of his childhood. He graduated from school at 14 and then went on to work on a farm in the Queensland’s Darling Downs for seven years before he was elected into Parliament in 1989, at an age of 21.
The 2001 state election resulted in a huge victory by the Labor Party, with Premier Peter Beattie going from a one-seat majority to a 22-seat majority and the Nationals were reduced to 12 seats of the 89-seat parliament. Following the defeat Springborg was elected as the Coalition of the Liberals was cut off and Springborg was elected as Deputy Opposition Leader.
The failure of the two conservative parties to sign a new Coalition agreement convinced Springborg of the need to merge the Liberals and Nationals at a state level. Presenting a proposal modelled on the Conservative Party of Canada, Springborg went about campaigning through 2004 for the support of both state party organisations in creating a new unified party.
The campaign for the 2004 state election relied heavily on Springborg’s personal profile. He literally ran for much of the campaign, appearing jogging through state forests on electoral advertising emphasising his physical fitness. The Nationals marketed Springborg merchandise extensively, including life-size cardboard cutouts. In a move unthinkable for Nationals of an earlier era, he appeared in a Courier-Mail photograph clad only in a towel and ironing his own shirt.
The Nationals continued to be in opposition until 1996 after which their Goss Labor government fell out of office following the state election. A resulting negative ruling within the Queensland Court of Disputed Returns and the subsequent by-election loss of Mundingburra’s seat. Mundingburra by Labor caused to the resignation of then premier Wayne Goss. The coalition of National-Liberal reformers took control in the government of Rob Borbidge but only with the backing of an independently elected MP Liz Cunningham. In 1998, just before the Borbidge government was ousted, Springborg was sworn in as Minister of Natural Resources, again setting records as the youngest Queensland minister.

The 1989 Queensland state election, Springborg became the youngest person to be elected to the parliament of Queensland by winning the safe Nationals seat in Carnarvon in the Darling Downs. The identical year the 32 year reign of the Nationals on a state level came to an end. Springborg was a representative of the younger generation of Nationals who were not a part of the long-serving ex- Premier Sir Joh Bjelke Petersen, as well as there were allegations of corruption as well as improper administration arising from the Fitzgerald Inquiry. Redistributions that followed forced Springborg to move to his seat in the Southern Downs.
Borbidge subsequently resigned as Leader of the Nationals and his place was taken by Mike Horan, father of international Rugby Union player Tim Horan. After widespread speculation and criticism, the Nationals elected Springborg as leader in 2003.
