Lawrence Sher, ASC (born on February 4 1970) is an American cinematographer and film director popular for his comedy films like Garden State, The Dictator as well as The Hangover series, frequently working together with director Todd Phillips and Zach Braff. His directorial debut was in the film Father Figures, which began with a broad theatrical release on the 22nd of December the 22nd of December, 2017 through Warner Bros. Pictures. He was nominated to win one of the Academy Award and BAFTA Award for the Best Cinematography of the film Joker produced by Phillips.

As cinematographer for the The Hangover film, Sher was cinematographer. The Hangover, Sher described the scene that opens the film shows the main characters sitting on the rooftop of their hotel, looking out over an unrepresentative view of the Las Vegas Strip; Sher said he tried to capture the scene behind the scenes in Vegas — after the characters get up in the morning–by filming scenes behind the hotels where the action occurs. The actor Bradley Cooper credited Sher’s visual style for enhancing the comedy of the film noting that Sher is a professional with “a great eye, a lot of energy and he just knows what’s funny” and “Some guys just can’t shoot comedies, but Larry knows exactly what he’s doing.”

As of 2019, Sher lives in Los Angeles, California, together with his partner Hema Patel and his 13 year-old son, Max, and daughter Matilda. He was previously married to Jessica Aronoff from 1998 to 2017.

On January 13, 2020, Lawrence was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on the movie, Joker.

After graduating from the college, the student moved into Los Angeles and immediately pursued an employment in motion-picture production. He began as a gaffer for film shoots and as an assistant in commercials, eventually becoming a cinematographer. Her first big release was 2001’s movie Kissing Jessica Stein. Sher was a critical hit with the 2004 film Garden State. Duane Byrge from The Hollywood Reporter, in his review of the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, credited Sher’s film compositions for “pack[ing] insight into the character’s psychological states”. Sher also worked on the 2007 film Dan In Real Life starring Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche and the 2009 release I Love You, Man featuring Paul Rudd. Although Sher hopes to direct but is not in any pressure as “I don’t think I’ve fulfilled all of my goals as a cinematographer yet”.

Sher was born into an ethnically Jewish family, and was raised within Teaneck, New Jersey, where he went to school his high school, and then graduated in the year 1988 at Teaneck High School. The father of his son, Paul went on to become an obstetrician of the New York University Medical Center as well as her mother Joan worked as a school teacher and teacher at Queens’ Lexington School for the Deaf. It was during the trip sponsored by the high school in Paris that Sher began to develop a love for photography. This was after his dad convinced him bring the camera of a 35mm format with his during the trip. Sher is still connected to Teaneck and stayed at the bottom of her aunt’s house there during production of Garden State, where he could use the his love for the state of New Jersey to capture shots on location in the state to give the appearance of the kind of place that The Record described as a “verdant wonderland”. He expressed his pride in his home town in Teaneck and its diverse population and recalled the ways the city “spent a lot of time with an eclectic group of people. He was a student at Wesleyan University, where he was initially planning to pursue medical school, and was followed by his twin sister Andy who eventually became an Urologist. After taking a class on the history of cinema, Sher developed an immediate fascination with cinema. He recalled his childhood days of “All I wanted to do was spend every waking moment learning about movies and cinematography.” He decided to pursue a degree in economics, and graduated from Wesleyan in 1992.

With the success of Zach Braff’s Kickstarter, Sher worked on Braff’s 2014 feature, Wish I Was Here.
