Burns did naturopathy research and naturopathy, but she canceled studying for an entire full year to concentrate on her Olympic race in 2000. working under Australian national Taekwondo coach Jin Tae Jong. She trained for 5-7 hours every day to prepare to compete in the Olympic competition. Burns was listed as 165 centimeters (5’5″) tall, and 49 kg (108 lbs.) for weight. She has since stated that she weighs 49 kg (108 lbs.) however she has recently stated that she weighs 54 kg (119 lbs.) would be her normal weight. On August 23, 2000 just one month away from the Sydney Olympics she was presented with an Australian Sports Medal. Burns was awarded a gold medal in Taekwondo in the 2000 Summer Olympics at the event marked by controversial time-of-day judging. She beat Taiwanese opponent Chi Shu-Ju during the quarter-finals and claimed that the loud cheers of the local parochial crowd had affected the judges. She then she won in the Olympic finale against Cuban rival Urbia Melendez.

Her Olympic gold medal was stolen in 2003, but it was recovered within a few days. That same year, she published her autobiography, Fighting Spirit: From a charmed childhood to the Olympics and beyond.

Burns is linked with the Victorian Institute of Sport and the South Australian Sports Institute. Apart from her taekwondo career, Burns also works as a motivational speaker and promotes the “Zip Bag,” which she designed. She also supports the Red Dust Role Models community project and is an ambassador for charitable organisation World Vision. Burns resides in Melbourne with her husband, Nathan Muller, and their children, Mac Banjo (born in early 2009) and Piper (born in 2010).

A long and successful career in tournaments was highlighted by the participation in 12 Australian female national women’s taekwondo championships. She also won the bronze medal won in the World Cup in 1996, an award of bronze in the weight-under 51 kilogram classification at the 1997 World Taekwondo Championships in Hong Kong and gold during the US Open taekwondo competition in 1999. Her debut performance at World Championships was at the 1993 World Taekwondo Championships in New York and she was able to share fiveth in the Bantamweight division of the 1995 World Taekwondo Championships in the Philippines. She also has won medals at other competitions outside of Australia.
