Toivola traveled to New Orleans for the first time in 1995. she has been there ever since. She met her husband, trumpeter Leroy Jones there, and they’ve been together from 1997 and have been have been married since the year the year 2016.
Toivola was raised in Helsinki and was a student at the Lycee of French- Finlandaises in Helsinki and graduated from the high school in 1994. Then she went on to study Romance ethnomusicology and philology at Helsinki University of Helsinki. Her master’s thesis was about The ReBirth Brass Band of New Orleans and was awarded the grant to go on a field trip through the Finnish Cultural Foundation in 2003. The title of her thesis was”Feel Like Funkin’ It Up – A study of ReBirth Brass Band, a New Orleans Jazz Band called ReBirth Brass Band. Toivola was a graduate of the university in the year 2005.

Toivola began to discover jazz in the early 90s his mom took her to a jazz festival.
Somehow, my mom had an idea to take me along for the Classic Jazz Festival [in Helsinkiin 1991] for its jam sessions and performances. I was awed by the the traditional music there and haven’t been capable of letting it go since. Jazz is my jam.
