A right-handed player Schlukebir began playing tennis when she was just four years old, and was being introduced to the sport through her mom. She finished second in singles for girls in the competition during the 1991 US Open, with partner Julie Steven. Then she was a part of the team of collegiate athletes in the tennis club at Stanford University and in 1997 was part of the team that won the championship. In her own career, she was four-time All-American and during the championship year of 1997, she received Stanford’s award for “Sophomore Athlete of the Year” as well as “Woman of the Year”. She graduated from Stanford in 1997 with the degree of psychology. She after which she joined the professional tour full-time.
Schlukebir was a regular participant in grand slam events. She reached the women’s doubles quarter-finals of the 1998 US Open with Amy Frazier while accounting for sixth seed Anna Kournikova and Larisa Neiland. In 1999, she played in mixed doubles alongside Mike Bryan at the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open. Her most impressive grand slam win in mixed doubles was an appearance in the quarterfinals with Eric Taino at the 2000 Wimbledon Championships and they were knocked out to Lleyton Hewitt as well as Kim Clijsters.
