In Timmins, Ontario, Kreiner was an alpine racer in Canada The youngest of six children born to Margaret (Peggy) Kreiner and Harold O. Kreiner (1920-1999) who was who was a Timmins doctor and coach before she made the Canadian national team. He was the team physician on the Canadian alpine ski team during their 1966 World Championships in Portillo, Chile and also for his role as the doctor for the Canadian Olympic Team for the Winter games of 1998 located in Grenoble, France.
Kreiner’s Olympic victory in 1976 shook even her. She had taken home the majority of her belongings from Innsbruck and was required to take a loan for a uniform to attend the ceremony for the medals. Her sibling Laurie is also an avid World Cup racer and two-time Olympian She was placed in the 28th position starting (of 43) and shed an emotional cry for Kathy when she was still in the beginning gate. She placed 27th. Laurie was just a few points away from her chance at an Olympic award in the year 1972 due to fourth place in the giant Slalom.
Kreiner married Dave Phillips, a former freestyle skier with the Canadian national team. As of 2020, she remains the only Olympic gold medallist from Timmins.
Kreiner joined the national team ‘B’ at the age of 13 for a year. She was then made a member of the A team during the summer of. Her very first World Cup top ten result in mid-January 1972, which was a sixth-place finish in a downhill in Grindelwald, Switzerland. A few months later Kreiner finished 14th on the slope event at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan. Her debut World Cup podium in 1973 at Alyeska in Alaska in the giant slalom she also won one of her only World Cup victory at age 16 in 1974 in Pfronten, West Germany. Kreiner competed for 10 years at the World Cup circuit and finished with a victory, seven podiums and 46 top 10s. Following her Olympic win she was awarded the Canadian Female Athlete of the Year in the year 1976.

She took home the giant slalom race at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. In the first race on Friday , the 13th, Kreiner prevented double gold medallist Rosi Mittermaier from winning the women’s alpine races while Mittermaier took home her silver award. This was Canada’s only gold medal from Innsbruck.
At the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, Kreiner finished fifth in the downhill and ninth in the giant slalom, held at Whiteface Mountain. During her final season in 1981, Kreiner ascended her only World Cup podium in downhill, and raced independent of the Canadian national team. Her sixth and final podium in giant slalom came nearly four years earlier at Sun Valley in March 1977.
