Katalin Szili is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on May 13, 1956 in Barcs, Somogy County, Hungary. Katalin Szili (born 13 May 1956 in Barcs, Hungary) is an ex-member of the Hungarian Parliament. She was President of Hungary’s National Assembly of Hungary from 2002 until 2009.

Following the local elections of 2010 which took place on the 3rd of October in 2010, she established The Social Union (SZU) and was its first chairperson. This led to her was forced to leave her position with the Hungarian Socialist Party and their parliamentarian group and continued her work in parliament as an independent MP. But, as an elected member of Parliament, she’s having a four-year mandate that ends in 2014. Therefore, the Social Union party Social Union instantly has some presence in Parliament. This isn’t usually the case for those who have received lower than 5 percent of the votes.

In 2011 Szili became a member of the Nemzeti Konzultációs Testület (National Consultative body) preparing the new constitution. Later, she presented her own proposal. Szili was appointed Chairperson of the Committee on Sustainable Development on 25 February 2013.

She was considered to be an internal opposition within the MSZP in 2009. In 2009, Szili quit her post as Speaker of Parliament and was replaced by Bela Katona of MSZP. She was the founder of The Movement of Alliance for the Future in the year 2010 and had its own candidate for certain areas during the 2010 Hungarian elections to the parliamentary. Szili got elected to Parliament of Hungary via the Baranya County Party list where she was the chairperson of that Local MSZP branch.

After earning a degree in law from Janus Pannonius University, she graduated with a degree in human ecology as well as political sciences. She was the legislator from 1994 until 2014. In 1994-98,, she was the secretary to the political for the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Water. In 1998-2002,, she was the Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly.

The candidate was from her Hungarian Socialist Party to be the president in year 2005 Hungarian election for president. Szili lost the presidential election 7 June 2005, losing to the candidate of the opposition Laszlo Solyom. The Hungarian Constitution states that the President is selected from the National Assembly of Hungary, therefore the election of the opposition was somewhat of a shock. The party that was part of the junior coalition that is that is the Alliance of Free Democrats (SZDSZ) however, had been adamant the fact that they would never be voting for the President who was a partisan. Szili as a senior part of Hungary’s Socialist party was deemed to be a as a partisan. SZDSZ abstained, which allowed an alternative candidate, more neutral Solyom (who was first selected by a non-governmental group Vedegylet and later was endorsed by opposition) to be elected to the presidency. Another reason for the sham nomination was the fact that SZDSZ was not advised beforehand and Szili was not qualified compared to Solyom who had previously held the highest post as President of Hungary’s Constitutional Court of Hungary. In 2009, Szili was the candidate for mayor for MSZP for the post of mayor of Pecs, a major Hungarian town, Pecs. She lost the race to Zsolt Pava.

On 17 October 2013 Katalin Szili and her party, the Social Union (SZU), entered into an alliance with 11 other parties and civil groups (including Centre Party) and established Community for Social Justice People’s Party (KTI). Her new party did not reach the 5% threshold contrary in the 2014 election, as a result she lost her parliamentary seat after 20 years.
