Karl Andrew Pillemer (born October 15th 1954) is an American sociologist and gerontologist. He is Hazel E. Reed Professor of Human Development at Cornell University, director of the Bronfenbrenner Center for Translational Research and Professor of Gerontology in Weill Cornell Medicine. His research is focused on the intergenerational relationships in later life and long-term care for disabled and frail older people as well as social engagement and participation of older people. Pillemer is the creator of Cornell Legacy Project. Cornell Legacy Project, which since 2004 has collected the accounts of the wisdom of over 2,000 senior Americans.

Pillemer earned his B.A. in English from Boston University in 1977 and was awarded his M.A. at Brandeis University in 1980, and then the Ph.D. from Boston University in 1985. As part of the course of his Ph.D. dissertation work he was a part of Rosalie Wolf. Wolf on one of the first large-scale studies on programs to stop and treat elder abuse or neglect. He then moved into the University of New Hampshire in 1985 to study along with Murray A. Straus and David Finkelhor, directing a large-scale survey of the population which established the initial prevalence rates of neglect and abuse of older people. At the time the researcher conducted an assessment of the prevalence of nursing homes for elder abuse which showed the extent of the problem. Pillemer also started his long-term program of study on how to improve care for nursing homes. He is creating five books that were utilized in the nursing home industry. Pillemer relocated from the state of New York to Cornell University in 1990, where he’s an academic full professor. In the last twenty- five years of his tenure at Cornell the professor has conducted investigations and empirical research on intergenerational relationships. The theoretical and empirical focus of his work is revisiting the concept of the concept of ambivalence, in the context of the relationship between parents and children during later life.
