In 1996, Rehnqvist was awarded in 1996 the Lakerol Arts Award “for her renewal of the relationship between folk music and art music” and also the Spelmannen Prize by the newspaper Expressen. In 1997, she received her the Christ Johnson Prize for Solsangen (Sun Song). In 2001 she was awarded the Kurt Atterberg Prize, and in 2005/06, the Rosenberg Award. In March of 2006 Rehnqvist received the distinction of an important review of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2007, Rehnqvist was awarded the Hugo Alfven Prize. In 2014, she received an Grammis within the field of Classic for her CD Live.
Rehnqvist wrote Solsangen (Sun Song) in 1994. It was composed for chamber orchestra, featuring one female soloist and two Narrators. The text is inspired by The Icelandic Solarljod (The Sing of the Sun) which is the title of an Old Norse poem written c. 1200 in the classical geometric form that is characteristic of the Poetic Edda, but with text derived from Christian visionary poetry.

- She pursued composition studies up up to 1984, working with Gunnar Bucht Par Lindgren, and Brian Ferneyhough among other musicians. In the years between 1976 and 1991, she was the conductor and artistic director for Stans Kor, the Swedish choir. Stans Kor. From 2000 to 2003 , she was Composer in Residence for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Svenska Kammarorkestern. She composed for them an array of pieces, that included a concerto with clarinettist Martin Frost, and the Symphonic Work Arktis Arktis!, inspired by a trip to the polar region in the spring of 1999. The two pieces have been recorded during May of 2005. The Choral Symphony Light of Light, which includes children’s choirs and orchestra, premiered in Paris in 2004.
A number of her compositions were composed to reflect the voices and interpretations from Lena Willemark and Susanne Rosenberg as both were known as folk singers. Examples include Davids Nimm and Puksanger Lockrop (1989). Rehnqvist incorporates the technique of kulning (cattle call) in her compositions which is a high-pitched singing technique that was used in the past by Scandinavia shepherds who communicate with their livestock over long distances, calling their livestock down from mountain tops and even scaring predators away. Puksanger and lockrop (Timpanum Songs herding calls) is her third vocal work, composed for two vocalists and percussion. the kulning “begins the piece and sets the atmosphere for the entire work” and is and is followed by a segment that is based on “condescending traditional Finnish proverbs” concerning women. It is described as “highly powerful satirical attacks against misogyny. This is followed by a kulning part that is a resurgence against the old concepts”.
In 2006, a retrospective of her work was presented by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Niklas Willén. In 2009, Rehnqvist was appointed the first female professor of composition at the Royal College of Music.
