Karen Lynne Moras , OAM (born June 6, 1954) Also known as her maiden name Karen Stephenson, is an Australian distance freestyle swimmer from during the decade of the 60s as well as the 70s. She was awarded a bronze medal in the 400-metre freestyle during 1968’s Summer Olympics. While she set numerous world records, she topped the charts in the period between Olympics and she was not able to secure gold at Olympic level.

Moras had the opportunity to be a representative for Australia in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich in the 800-metre and 400-metre freestyle, as well as the individual 400-metre Medley, but she was not able to make it to the finals in one in the competitions. She resigned from swimming competitively following the Olympics. She was a sister to Narelle Moras took part in the Munich Games, finishing eighth in the freestyle event of 800 metres.

In the year following Moras returning to Australia the new swimming sensation, Shane Gould, had joined the group of Carlile and towards the end of the year, Gould beat Moras at state carnivals. In 1971, when Gould took every freestyle world record from 100-metres to 1500 metres, Moras left Carlile’s group to work with Don Talbot, feeling that Carlile was focused too much on Gould.

Training with Forbes Carlile, and making her international debut as a 14 year old athlete, Moras was expected to be a medal winner in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. However, she struggled to adapt to the cold atmosphere at high altitudes and was required medical assistance for breathing issues and hyperventilation. Despite this, Moras did manage to win bronze in the freestyle 400m, in a close second place to the American team comprised of Debbie Meyer and Linda Gustavson. She was close to claiming another bronze medal in the 800-metre freestylebut ended up getting beaten to fourth place in the final by 0.1 percent Mexican Maria Teresa Ramirez who was significantly more accustomed to regional conditions.

In the year 1970, Moras broke the world record for freestyle in 800 metres in the Australian Championships, qualifying for the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. She was the top swimmer during the Games and won the 200-,400-freestyle events of 800 metres and 200 meters and shaved seven seconds off her world-record 800-metre freestyle record. The time she won in her 400m freestyle race was just less than a second from Meyer’s record in the world.

She was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985.
