Karen Brown is one of the most popular and richest Field Hockey Player who was born on January 9, 1963 in Redhill, United Kingdom. Karen Brown (born 1955 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma) also known as Karen “KB” Brown is an award-winning ballerina, teacher and repetiteur, as well as a ballet mistress and director. Her fame is due to her lengthy time as the principal dancer in the Dance Theatre of Harlem and as the first woman of African descent to manage a ballet troupe.
While she was praised for raising the profile of Oakland Ballet and enhancing the technical capabilities of its dancers Brown had to deal with a growing deficit due to the loss of arts funding and the closure of the city’s main performance venue. In order to save Oakland Ballet itself from shuttering in 2004, she suspended the 2004 season, and instead focused on a successful fundraising campaign that enabled operations to begin again with a fresh lineup of dancers just in time for the year-long celebration of its 40th anniversary.
Brown graduated from St. Mary’s College of California in 2013.
Since 2018 she has returned to teaching and her research in analyzing movement.
Utilizing her experience in her role as the director for her personal arts administration company, Karenina, Brown entered the international search for an artistic director who would be the successor for Oakland Ballet. In 2000, she was formally invited by the board of the company to take over the direction of the organization and became the only African-American female to lead an organization of ballet in the history of ballet in addition to being the first black woman woman to lead a previously white owned ballet company. After the suspension of Dance Theatre of Harlem of operations in the year 2004, Brown was the only African-American artistic director of a ballet organization around the globe. In her time, Brown worked to diversify the dance’s cast so that it more closely was representative of the diverse population of Oakland. Brown also updated the repertoire of choreographers for the company as well as expanding the company’s financing structure to provide more stability in its finances.
