Kang Chol-hwan is one of the most popular and richest Journalist who was born on September 18, 1968 in Pyongyang, North Korea. Kang Chol- hwan (pronounced [kaNG tch^l.bwan born on 18 September, 1968) is a North Korean defector and author. When he was a kid the author was imprisoned at the Yodok concentration camp for ten years. After his release , he left the country first to China then eventually in South Korea. He is the co-author together alongside Pierre Rigoulot, of The Aquariums of Pyongyang. He also served in the capacity of a writer on staff, specializing for North Korean affairs for The Chosun Ilbo. He is the founding director of the North Korea Strategy Center.
He was a member of a group who opposed the government. He was able to access foreign news and also sang foreign songs. This was completely forbidden by the laws of North Korea and he knew that it would put family members members at risk, too. When he learned of his arrest in North Korea, he was unable to discuss the issue within his own family. He fled the country as fast as was possible. In 1992 He and his fellow Yodok intern An Hyuk were able to escape to North Korea by crossing the Yalu River into China.
Kang hasn’t seen his relatives since he left. It was reported that his sister Mi-ho and her 11-year-old son were believed to be in Yodok the concentration camp.

In 1977 his grandfather was convicted of treason, and transferred into prison in the Senghori Concentration Camp. His grandfather was the Vice President of the Commercial Management office in Pyongyang, supervising all the commercial stores and department stores in Pyongyang. His grandmother was a member of the Supreme People’s Assembly and was the deputy head of the Workers’ Party organization of female members. She was deputy to Kim Il Sung’s wife. His family lived in relative luxury from his grandfather’s position and the fortune that he had given to the country upon the family’s return from Japan. Though they had never renounced their North Korean citizenship and Kang’s grandmother had been a staunch party member in both countries, Kang has stated that the family remained under a cloud of suspicion for having lived in Japan.
